Location and setting
Eßelborn is a small village in Rheinhessen, immediately to the west of the district town of Alzey. The built-up area developed along the Eßelborn stream. The municipality covers around 410 hectares and has about 390 residents.
Vineyard site Goldberg
The Eßelborner Goldberg lies at an altitude of about 240 to 285 metres and faces north-east. The soils consist of loess and colluvium, are rich in humus and allow for very good root penetration. According to the vineyard register, the wine-growing area covers 32.3 hectares; a municipal brochure names around 31 hectares of vineyards on the Goldberg.
Grape varieties and wine profile
At the Eßelborner Goldberg, Riesling, Silvaner, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot varieties have been documented. The wines are associated with an integrated acidity as well as notes of yellow fruit, apple, pear, peach, chalk and smoke.
History and classification
Eßelborn is documented in records of bequests to the Lorsch Abbey from the year 763 under the historic name Escilebrunnin. The Goldberg is listed as a single vineyard site Goldberg within the municipality and cadastral district of Eßelborn, within the area of Wonnegau and the large vineyard site Bergkloster. The name Goldberg is explained as an expression of general appreciation, not as a reference to deposits of gold.
