Location on the Main
Escherndorf is a wine village on the Volkacher Mains meander in the region Franconia. The vineyards are located in a pronounced river bend of the Main.
Vineyard sites and soils
The Lump site extends over about 25 hectares. It lies at an elevation of 190 to 270 metres, faces south as far as south-southeast and south-southwest, and has slope gradients of 45 to 75 percent. Highly weathered Upper Muschelkalk forms the soils. The Fürstenberg lies at an elevation of 200 to 260 metres, faces southeast and east, and reaches gradients of up to 60 percent. Muschelkalk, Lettenkeuper and loess clay occur there.
Heat and moisture
The Lump forms an amphitheatre-like vineyard site that collects warmth and sunlight and protects the vines from cold winds. The Main additionally reflects light into the vineyard. Deep, moisture-retaining soils and the moisture in late autumn can promote infection with botrytis on grapes for sweet wines from the site classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE under the name AM LUMPEN 1655.
Grape varieties and classification
At the Lump, among others, Silvaner, Riesling, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Scheurebe, Rieslaner, Müller-Thurgau, Gelber Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer and Spätburgunder are grown. Fürstenberg is associated, among others, with Silvaner, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller, Scheurebe, Kerner, Bacchus, Spätburgunder and Domina. The wines from the Lump are particularly associated with Silvaner, Riesling and Spätburgunder as well as the interplay between sweetness and acidity. Lump and Fürstenberg are classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE; the designation “Am Lumpen” has been documented as early as the year 1655.
