Location and landscape
Eschbach is a municipality in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg and lies in the Markgräflerland between the Southern Black Forest and the Upper Rhine Plain. The municipality belongs to the German-French-Swiss border region and is located near the Rhine as well as the Southern Black Forest. The municipal area ranges from about 201 to 255 metres above sea level.
Viticulture in the Markgräflerland
Eschbach is part of the wine-growing region Baden. The Markgräflerland is characterised by a mild, sunny climate that favours viticulture. The wine-growing region is associated with calcareous loess soils; for the single vineyard Maltesergarten such soils are explicitly described. Maltesergarten is listed as a Baden single vineyard, the name of which includes the municipality of Eschbach.
Grape varieties and wine styles
Gutedel is considered the characteristic grape variety of the Markgräflerland. Also mentioned regionally are Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder. The range of wines includes fresh, light Gutedel wines, white wines made from Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder, and red wines made from Spätburgunder.
History
The first documented written mention of Eschbach dates from the year 799. In a St. Gallen document, the place was referred to at the time as “ascabah”. The documented history of viticulture in the Markgräflerland goes back to the Roman period.
