Dörscheid

Location and landscape

Dörscheid is a municipality in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate. It lies on the right bank of the Rhine above the steep slopes of the Rhine valley, about 750 metres from the river and above Kaub. The settlement is situated at around 340 metres above sea level in the Taunus; the terrain falls steeply down to the Rhine.

History

Dörscheid likely developed from a settlement dating back to the ninth century and was first mentioned in 1250 under the name „Derscheid“. The original settlement consisted of two local districts. After the Thirty Years' War, Ober-Dörscheid was abandoned between about 1640 and 1644, while Nieder-Dörscheid developed into the present-day village.

Winegrowing in the Middle Rhine

Dörscheid belongs to the protected geographical area Mittelrhein. The region’s vineyards are located on valley and hillside sites between about 55 and 350 metres above sea level, predominantly with a south-easterly to south-westerly orientation. Devonian slate, quartzitic sandstone and quartzite are characteristic; in Dörscheid, steep sites with blue and copper-bearing slate are described.

Sites and wines

The individual sites Kupferflötz and Wolfsnack belong to the Großlage Herrenberg. Wines from Riesling, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder are documented there. These include dry Kabinett and dry Weißburgunder from Kupferflötz, as well as semi-dry Spätburgunder Rosé, semi-dry Grauburgunder and mild Riesling Kabinett from Wolfsnack. A Riesling Auslese from the 2023 vintage from Wolfsnack is documented as a rest-sweet Prädikatswein with 8.5% alcohol by volume and was fermented with grape-skin yeasts.
