Dalsheim

Location and Climate

Dalsheim is a village in Rheinhessen and belongs to the Wonnegau sub-region. Rheinhessen is a warm and dry wine-growing area with low rainfall and mild winters. The vineyard sites of Dalsheim are assigned to the protected designation of origin Rheinhessen.

Vineyard Sites and Soils

The Hubacker contains loess, clay marl and limestone rock. Riesling is grown there; the site is associated with mineral-influenced wines and potential for ageing. In the Bürgel, loess, marl and ochre-coloured limestone are found, which is referred to as terra fusca. Parts of the site are classified as loess over pararendzina and limestone over rendzina.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

Bürgel is associated with Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder. Documented wine styles include Pinot wines and sparkling wines.

Historic Village Centre

The Bürgel vineyard site lies next to the Fleckenmauer, a medieval limestone fortification around the historic settlement core. Its construction was approved in 1395 and probably took place between 1470 and 1490 using unworked limestone. The wall is around 1,100 metres long, up to 10 metres high, and has seven surviving towers. The name Bürgel has been attested since 1286 as “retro montem” and since 1358 in the form “uf dem berge”; Hubacker was first documented in 1610 as “am Hubacker”.
