Location and landscape
Creglingen lies on the Tauber in the north-east of Baden-Württemberg near the border with Bavaria. The municipal area covers around 117 square kilometres and consists of the core town and twelve formerly independent municipalities.
Geology and wine-growing landscape
In the Tauber valley near Creglingen, shell limestone shapes the geology. In the valleys, layers of the Middle and Upper Muschelkalk are exposed. Historic vineyard slopes are divided by dry-stone walls and stone embankments, which were laid out for the cultivation of the steep areas.
A cultural landscape trail leads over a former vineyard slope and, over 2.4 kilometres, overcomes around 50 metres of elevation.
Wine-growing in Creglingen
Creglingen is a Württemberg wine town on the Tauber. The vineyard associated with Creglingen, Röde, lies on the state border, covers about 20 ares and is planted with Kerner. The wine is marketed under the name “Creglinger Röde”.
The vineyard documentation also records that, beneath the former agricultural areas, a single well-kept vineyard has been preserved. Wine-growing in Creglingen had previously been interrupted for a longer period.
