Burgsponheim

Location in the Naheland

Burgsponheim is an Ortsgemeinde in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Rüdesheim. The town lies on elevated ground above the Ellerbach valley in the Naheland, between the Soonwald and the Nahe.

Vineyard sites and Grafenrunde

The Burgsponheim Grafenrunde runs through the vineyard sites Schloßberg, Pfaffenberg and Höllenpfad and offers views over the Ellerbach valley. In the vineyard register for 2024, 3.4 hectares were planted with vines in Höllenpfad and 4.1 hectares in Schloßberg.

Climate and winegrowing

In the upper Nahe region, cooler air masses from the Soonwald, Hunsrück and North Palatinate uplands take effect. Later ripening can support the development of Riesling aromas and acidity. Regionally, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, Dornfelder and Spätburgunder are among the most important grape varieties.

Historical and legal framework

In Burgsponheim is located the former ancestral seat of the Counts of Sponheim, which was first mentioned in documents in 1127. The town’s vineyard parcels lie in the protected winegrowing region Nahe; in 2023, designated Burgsponheim parcels were also included in the protected geographical designation area for Nahegauer Landwein. The revised site Pfaffenberg includes exclusively parcels in the Burgsponheim cadastral area.
