Location and landscape
Bombach is a district of Kenzingen in Baden-Württemberg and lies in the southern Upper Rhine region in the district of Emmendingen. The settlement is located in a valley at the edge of the Black Forest, which opens to the west towards the Upper Rhine Plain. Bombach belongs to the wine-growing region Baden.
Sommerhalde vineyard site
The Sommerhalde is an 11.06-hectare wine-growing site classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. Its slopes, which face south, south-west and west, lie at an altitude of 240 to 300 metres and have a gradient of 10 to 40 per cent. The soils consist of shell limestone (Muschelkalk) and loess.
Grape varieties and wine
Chardonnay and Spätburgunder are grown for the Sommerhalde; Spätburgunder is listed as the classified grape variety. VDP winegrower Bernhard Huber works the site. A documented wine from the winery is a dry red wine made from Spätburgunder, whose 2023 vintage consists entirely of this grape variety.
History
Bombach was first mentioned in 1144 under the historical name Bonbach. In 1185, Pope Lucius II confirmed to the St. Trudpert monastery its ownership of a farm in Bombach. Around 1290, the place came under the lower lordship of Üsenberg, belonged to the Margraviate of Hachberg from 1352 to 1369, then came under Austrian rule and in 1805 became part of Baden.
