Binau

Location and landscape

Binau is located in the Neckar-Odenwald district within the longest bend of the River Neckar, between the High Odenwald and the Little Odenwald. The municipality is situated at 154 metres above sea level.

Viticulture

The single vineyard plot Herzogsberg belongs to the wine-growing region Baden, area of Kraichgau. As legally listed municipalities, Binau and Diedesheim apply.

In addition to farming and livestock rearing, an extensive viticulture once shaped the municipality. In the 18th century, cultivation gradually shifted to pome fruit; in the 19th century, the phylloxera led to the abandonment of most vineyards. Vineyards are still planted on a few slopes, but the wine is no longer marketed directly by local producers.

History

Binau has been documented under historical place names in the Lorsch Codex since the year 769.
