Bermatingen

Location and natural setting

Bermatingen is located in the Lake Constance wine-growing region within the Baden wine-growing area in Baden-Württemberg. The vineyard areas developed from glacial moraine deposits with clay, sand and gravel. The soils are mostly medium- to deep-rooted, often calcareous, and on slopes are well-aerated and drained. Beneath the moraines lies molasse.

Climate and vineyards

Lake Constance stores heat, moderates temperature fluctuations and contributes to a long, mild autumn as well as a long, frost-free growing season. During the growing season from April to October, around 1,400 hours of sunshine are reached in the region; nearby reference stations record around 942 to 1,009 millimetres of precipitation annually.

The vineyard site Leopoldsberg Buchberg is oriented to the south-west to south, lies at an elevation of 440 to 500 metres and shows slope inclines of 0 to 40 per cent. The 6.43-hectare area is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in the wine-growing region Baden.

Grape varieties and wine style

The Bermatingen Leopoldsberg is designated as a red-wine site. In the red site, only Pinot Noir is cultivated; dry Pinot Noir has been documented. In addition, a Bermatingen-Leopoldsberg bottling from Pinot Gris and a Pinot Noir dry beerenauslese Weißherbst bottling are recorded.

Wine-growing history

Wine-growing in Bermatingen has been documented for more than 500 years and continues to shape the appearance of the town. In 1390, Bermatingen came under the jurisdiction of the Abbey of Salem, and in 1803, following secularisation, it passed to the Margraviate of Baden. Up to 1810, there were four large torkel presses; the winegrowers had to press their grapes in the torkel assigned to them.
