Location and landscape
Bad Schönborn is a municipality in the northern district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg and lies in the region Baden. Here, the Hardt plain of the northern Upper Rhine plain, the Kraichgau and the Neckar-Tauber-Gäu plateaux meet. The municipal area extends from about 104 metres above sea level in the north-west to just under 189 metres in the area of Große Wald in the east.
Goldberg and viticulture
The vineyard site Goldberg lies on a hillside above Bad Schönborn and offers views over the Rhine plain as far as the Palatinate Mountains. A municipal wine education trail is associated with this site. The Baden-Württemberg wine-growing cadastre recorded a total of 19 hectares of vineyard area for Bad Schönborn in 2023, of which 14 hectares were with white and 5 hectares with red grape varieties.
Geology and history
The municipality includes the Langenbrückener basin, where Posidonia shale from the Black Jurassic is exposed. In this geological setting, local viticulture is also located. Bad Schönborn was formed in 1971 through the merger of the former municipalities of Mingolsheim and Langenbrücken; since 1972, the current name has been used.
