Location and landscape
Bad Dürkheim is located in the Pfalz on the German Wine Route in the Mittelhaardt corridor, at the transition between the Upper Rhine Plain and the Palatinate Forest. The town lies on the raised western edge of the Upper Rhine Graben and at the outlet of the Isenach valley; vineyards adjoin the Palatinate Forest.
Climate and geology
The location to the east of the Palatinate Forest favours a mild, relatively dry climate. For the period 1991 to 2020, the climate data basis at the Bad Dürkheim station records 540 millimetres of annual precipitation, an average annual temperature of 11.1 °C, an average of 64 summer days and 19 hot days per year.
The geological landscape includes Buntsandstein, tectonic structures of the Upper Rhine Graben, marine carbonate deposits and Ice Age sediments. Numerous historic quarries, including the Kriemhildenstuhl, shape the area.
Viticulture
Viticulture in Bad Dürkheim has Roman roots. In the Roman villa Weilberg there is an approximately 2,000-year-old Roman wine press, which is linked to the cultivation and pressing of grapes in the Palatinate.
The local wine-growing region includes Bad Dürkheimer, Leistadter and Ungsteiner vineyard sites. Among those mentioned are Spielberg, Michelsberg, Weilberg and Herrenberg. Riesling is documented in the local viticulture and is considered in comparisons of different Bad Dürkheim soils.
