Location and Landscape
Auenwald lies on the eastern edge of the Backnang Bay, which belongs to the natural region unit of the Neckar basin, and borders the Murrhardt Forest in the Swabian-Franconian Forest. The elevations range from about 269 to 520 metres. In the area of Ebersberg between Däfern, Hohnweiler and Schloss Ebersberg, there are currently vineyards. Geologically, the sequence runs from loess in the west and gypsum Keuper east of the Brüdenbach, via reed sandstone and quartz sand at the Keuper edge, to stuben sandstone in the Murrhardt Forest.
Viticulture at Ebersberg
Historical records show vineyards at Ebersberg as early as 1528 in the land register of the Oberamt Backnang. Up to the beginning of the 20th century, viticulture there was a significant economic activity. After the First World War, the vineyards were largely cleared due to vine diseases and were not comprehensively replanted. In 1867, Ebersberg wine received an award at the World Exhibition in Paris. Historically important grape varieties were Silvaner and Trollinger.
Current Cultivation and Wines
The vineyards of the Ebersberger Vinöre are entirely on steep slopes with more than 30 percent incline. They are farmed sustainably with PIWI vines and ground cover between the rows of vines. The first PIWI vines were planted in 2004; after the establishment of the producer group in 2017, the vineyard area was expanded. The current range includes red and white cuvées, Rotling, rosé and a red wine aged in wood. For the Rotling, red and white grapes are pressed together; the rosé is pressed after a few hours of maceration time; a red wine matures for twelve months in oak barrels.
