Aichwald

Location and landscape

Aichwald is a municipality in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg. It lies on the Vorderer Schurwald between the Rems and Neckar valleys. The settlements on the high plateau reach about 460 to 480 metres above sea level, while the slopes fall to around 285 metres.

Vine growing in Aichelberg

In the Aichelberg district, around 13 hectares of vines are cultivated on the south-facing slopes above the Baacher Tal towards the Remstal. The climate there is considered favourable for intensive fruit growing and viticulture. The wine-growing landscape also includes vineyards and a historic press house; a press house in Aichelberg is documented for the year 1558.

Soils and vineyard site

The geology of Aichwald is characterised by Keuper strata and rocks of the Lower Jurassic, including layers of sandstone, marl and limestone. On the high plateaus, loess loams occur locally, as do pseudogley-parabraun soils; on slopes with nodular marl, pelosoils are found. The single vineyard site Luginsland in Aichelberg belongs to the Wartbühl grand site and is among the higher-lying vineyards in the Remstal; the vineyards of this group extend up to about 420 metres.

Formation of the municipality

The present-day municipality of Aichwald was formed in January 1974 through the merger of Aichelberg, Aichschieß with Krummhardt, and Schanbach with Lobenrot.
