Hungerbiene

Location and classification

The Hungerbiene is a single vineyard site in the cadastre area of Gundheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Großlage Bergkloster in the Wonnegau area and covers 23 hectares. The site lies at around 140 to 150 metres above sea level, is oriented to the south, and consists of around 65 per cent hillside and 35 per cent flat areas.

Soil

The site is characterised above all by loess-pararendzina, formed from calcareous dust deposited during the ice ages. The soil is described as deep, fertile and calcareous loam with a clayey silty component. It has good water storage capacity available to plants, sufficient aeration and good conditions for rooting; sandier loam is also documented as part of the soil.

Grape varieties and wine style

In the Hungerbiene, Grauburgunder, Silvaner and Huxelrebe have been documented. The wines are associated with aromas of yellow fruit, apple, peach, pear and citrus. Their profile is considered lean and refreshing, with moderate acidity, medium structure and early drinking ripeness.

Name and history

In the 19th century, the site was listed under the name “auf der Hungerbühne”. The term “Hungerbiene” is probably linked, through folk etymology, to “Hungerborn”, a source or a well that can dry out easily.
