Location and History
The Philipp Kuhn winery is located in Laumersheim in the Pfalz, Germany. The Kuhn family has been based in Laumersheim since 1680. In 1992, at the age of 20, Philipp Kuhn took over responsibility for the family’s vineyards and wine production. Already in 1988, at the age of 16, he planted Spätburgunder in the Kirschgarten on a plot measuring 2,500 square metres.
Vineyards and Soils
The estate cultivates 61.30 hectares of vineyard area. Among other sites, it works in the Laumersheimer Kirschgarten, a south-easterly exposed location at around 115 to 150 metres above sea level with a slope of 5 to 15 percent, as well as in the Steinbuckel at around 120 to 150 metres above sea level and with a slope of 5 to 10 percent. The documented soils include massive limestone, blue calcareous marl, loess and quartz sand. In the Kirschgarten there is loess-clay material with limestone pieces over deep tertiary limestone; in the Steinbuckel, loess and loess-clay are found over massive limestone, as well as calcareous marl strongly mixed with limestone.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
Riesling and Spätburgunder are the leading grape varieties. In addition, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Cabernet Franc and Gewürztraminer are grown. The wines are created in a varietal-spanning style that is Frankophile, fully fermented and dry. Off-dry wines are produced only in exceptional vintages and in very small quantities.
Cultivation and Maturation
All grapes are hand-harvested. The winery is certified as EU-organic and carries the Fair’n-Green sustainability certification. Since 2008, it has been a member of the VDP and is documented as a producer of VDP.SEKT and VDP.SEKT.PRESTIGE. In the cellar, numerous small wooden casks are used for maturing the wines.
