Location and vineyards
The Koehler-Ruprecht winery is located in the centre of Kallstadt on the German Wine Route in the Palatinate in Germany. It cultivates 12.5 hectares of vineyard land, which is predominantly characterised by limestone.
Soils and sites
The Kallstadter Annaberg lies directly at the forest edge and in the western part has a high proportion of sandstone and chalk, where Chardonnay is grown. The Kallstadter Saumagen at the western edge of the village is characterised by calcareous sandstone, while the Kallstadter Steinacker located east of the German Wine Route is determined by limestone and sandstone. The Kallstadter Kreidkeller lies between Saumagen and Annaberg.
The Saumagen has been handed down as a named vineyard site since 1810/36. The Annaberg received its name after a plot of land was named about 120 years ago after the owner’s wife.
Cultivation and vinification
The grapes are selectively hand-harvested and processed gently. All wines are fermented spontaneously and developed in old wooden barrels. An extended period of lees ageing and bottling at a late stage are also part of the production method described.
Grape varieties and wine styles
The documented range of grape varieties includes Riesling, Chardonnay, Scheurebe, Spätburgunder, Weißer Burgunder and Muskateller. The Rieslings from Kallstadt sites are produced, among other styles, as dry Kabinett, dry Spätlese and dry Auslese; in addition, Riesling Auslese and Beerenauslese are documented. Riesling and Scheurebe from Kallstadter Steinacker are also made with residual sweetness. On the labels, the Palatinate is given as the growing region, Kallstadt as the place, and the grape variety, quality level and sweetness level are specified.
