Johannes Lochner in Deidesheim
The wine project of Johannes Lochner is based in Deidesheim in the Pfalz, Germany. The associated company Rohstoff 2016 Wein GmbH has its address at Marktplatz 8 in Deidesheim. Lochner is a trained winemaker and previously worked as cellarmaster for Koehler-Ruprecht in the Pfalz.
Development and grape varieties
Lochner founded the Rohstoff wine business in 2016. After moving to Deidesheim, the site there was opened in July 2023. Documented wines include Rieslings from the Königsbacher Ölberg and the Leistadter Kalkofen as well as Chardonnay.
Grapes and winemaking
The grapes come from selected producers with their own vineyards. Lochner handles the selection and harvest, while the producers carry out the remaining work in the vineyard. Predominantly old vines provide consistently low yields; only healthy grapes are harvested at the intended ripeness and by hand.
Documented vinification includes whole-bunch pressing, oxidation of the must, low or no fining, untreated must and spontaneous fermentation, mostly in wood. The wines mature for more than two winters, usually 18 to 24 months, on the full lees and generally without sulphur. Suitable lots remain on the lees for longer and are bottled unfiltered.
Origin and style
Since the 2020 vintage, the project has used its own underground sandstone cellar for winemaking. The 2018 and 2019 vintages were still ripened at the respective producers’ premises. The wines are described as cool, elegant and restrained in their fruit, with integrated acidity and a pronounced mineral character. The aim of the project is to preserve and express the characteristics of the vineyard sites and the typical identity of the wines.
