Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan is based in Deidesheim in the wine-growing region Pfalz in Germany.
History and development
The origins of the winery date back to 1718, when Pierre Jordan acquired the first vines of the property that would later become his. After the death of Andreas Jordan in 1848, the family estate was divided among three heirs; out of this emerged the estates Jordan, Buhl and Deinhard. Historical development included the separate planting of vines, harvesting and vinification of individual parcels, as well as bottling under the company’s own name. Since the early 20th century, the winery has been known as Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan.
Grape varieties and wine styles
Riesling accounts for the largest share at 80 per cent of the vineyard portfolio. In addition, the documented range includes Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Spätburgunder, Gewürztraminer and Rieslaner. The Rieslings are produced as estate wine, village wine, first site and grand cru; including VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. The range extends from dry wines with pronounced acidity, a mineral character, structured grip and expressions specific to the site, through to Auslese, Spätlese and Beerenauslese. In addition, Riesling sparkling wines are made using traditional bottle fermentation, as well as Gewürztraminer and Rieslaner Auslesen.
Viticulture and sites
Viticulture is carried out organically and according to biodynamic principles; an EU organic certification is listed for the winery. The grapes are harvested selectively by hand, sometimes in multiple passes, and pressed gently. In the cellar, clarification by sedimentation, stainless steel and traditional large wooden vessels are used. Selected wines ferment spontaneously with vineyard yeasts and mature on full lees until bottling. Documented site characteristics include the high proportion of volcanic basalt in Forster Pechstein, weathered limestone material and fine loess clay in Deidesheimer Hohenmorgen, as well as limestone and in part coloured sandstone in Langenmorgen.
