Weingut Emmerich Knoll

Location and History

The winery Emmerich Knoll is located in Unterloiben in the Wachau region of Austria. The Knoll family has been producing wine for many generations; the first Knoll wine bottles were filled in the 1950s. The Baroque label with Saint Urban was first used for a Knoll wine bottle in 1962.

Vineyards and Grape Varieties

The family farms 16 hectares of vineyard area. Documented sites include Kellerberg, Loibenberg, Pfaffenberg and Schütt; in addition, the winery also lists Kreutles and Trum as the sources of its wines. The most important grape varieties are Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. The range is complemented by Gelben Muskateller, Traminer, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Wine Style and Classification

In describing its Riesling and Grüner Veltliner wines, the winery characterises them as clear, precise, mineral and structured. Some wines only reach their full potential after years or decades. Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd wines are produced within the classification system of Vinea Wachau.

Tasting Room Bottlings

A Grüner Veltliner tasting room bottling has been produced in almost every year since 1988, and a Riesling tasting room bottling since 2000. The tasting room bottlings are described as dry Auslesen; in addition, sweet Auslesen and other Prädikat wines are made.
