Location and Vineyards
The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is legally registered in Vosne-Romanée in France. Its most important historic vineyards are located in Vosne-Romanée. The estate includes Grand Cru sites in Vosne-Romanée as well as areas in Corton and Corton-Charlemagne in the Burgundy region.
History and Ownership
The estate’s historic development dates back to the medieval acquisition of vines by the priors of Saint-Vivant. Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet acquired Romanée-Conti in 1869. Today’s ownership structure developed through the families Gaudin de Villaine and Leroy. The Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was founded on 31 July 1942.
Viticulture
The Domaine works within organic and biodynamic cultivation options. For plant protection, in the 2016 vintage the quantities of copper and sulphur measured were stated as approved agents. A dedicated selection and propagation programme preserves Pinot Noir material from the old vines of Romanée-Conti. At the 2014 harvest, among other things, grapes affected by Botrytis, sun-damaged and less ripe grapes were sorted out.
Varietals and Wines
Pinot Noir is the estate’s most important red grape variety; Chardonnay is used for the white wine sites and their harvests. The portfolio includes red Grand Crus from Échézeaux, Grands Échézeaux, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Romanée-Conti, La Tâche and Corton, as well as white Grand Crus from Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. In the 2015 vintage, the red grapes were fermented as whole bunches without destemming; fermentation times were about 21 to 23 days depending on the cuvée. The appellation Romanée-Conti is an AOC for still red wines from Vosne-Romanée and carries the designation “grand cru”.
