Garagenweingut Christian Hormuth

Garage winery in Sankt Martin

The garage winery Christian Hormuth is located in Sankt Martin in the Pfalz, Germany. The Hormuth family has been based in Sankt Martin since 1609 and cultivates vineyards there.

Vineyard sites and vineyards

The vineyards are situated in the cadastral districts of Sankt Martin, Maikammer, Kirrweiler and Edenkoben. The named sites include St. Martiner Kirchberg, St. Martiner Baron, Maikammerer Kapellenberg, Maikammerer Heiligenberg, Kirrweilerer Oberschloß, Edenkobener Bergel and Edenkobener Heilig Kreuz. The St. Martiner Kirchberg am Wingertsberg is a steep, south-facing site with sandstone (Buntsandstein).

Cultivation and grape varieties

After the restructuring of the business in 2017, the winery cultivates around five hectares of vines. The deep, fertile soils are worked mostly mechanically under the vines, holistically and in a nature-friendly way. This is complemented by reduced plant protection and consistent work in the vineyard canopy. In the vineyard parcel Im Grabenteil, the first Chardonnay was planted.

White grape varieties include Riesling, Grauburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Blanc and Weißburgunder. For the red grape varieties, Merlot, Syrah, Spätburgunder, Dornfelder and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown.

Vinification and Riesling

The Riesling from the steep, south-facing Buntsandstein site of St. Martiner Kirchberg is a defining wine of this site. In 2025, Christian Hormuth produced around 1,000 bottles of St. Martiner Kirchberg Riesling 2024 in his garage; the grapes are normally sold to four selected local winemakers.
