Location and History
Château Yon-Figeac is located in the north-west of the Saint-Émilion appellation, near the town of the same name, on the right bank of Bordeaux. The estate is around 50 kilometres from Bordeaux. It was founded at the beginning of the 19th century; the château building was built in 1886.
Vineyards and Farming
The vineyards cover around 24 hectares and are planted on clay and sandy soils over iron-rich hard subsoil, the so-called crasses de fer. Planting density is around 6,200 vines per hectare, with an average vine age of around 32 years. The grape variety blend consists of 80% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot.
Château Yon-Figeac, according to its own information, has been working with sustainable methods and traditional cultivation practices since 2011. Since 2013, it has held ISO-14001 certification, and since the 2016 vintage it has held HVE certification at level 3. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with plot selection and mechanical sorting of the grapes.
Vinification and Ageing
Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled, truncated cone-shaped stainless-steel tanks. The maceration is typically 25 to 30 days and is accompanied by daily, measured extraction, as well as a hot maceration after fermentation. Ageing takes place in wooden barrels or in French oak casks, previously used for one or two wines.
Wines
The wines of Château Yon-Figeac are red Saint-Émilion wines with fruity and spicy notes, as well as freshness. The main wine Château Yon-Figeac is classified as a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé; in addition, the second wine Les Roches de Yon is produced as a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. Château Yon-Figeac is listed by the INAO in the classification of the Saint-Émilion Grand Crus.
