Weingut Andres

Site and terroir

The Andres winery is based in Deidesheim in the Pfalz. Its vineyards lie along the Mittelhaardt at the foot of the Palatinate Forest, with an opening towards the Rhine plain. Warm, sunny days, heat-storing soils and cool, descending winds shape the climate. These conditions support a slow, even ripening and preserve freshness, acidity and finesse.

The sites range from south-easterly exposed slopes to cooler locations oriented to the east. The documented soils include Buntsandstein (red sandstone), calcareous marl, loess and clay. At the Königsbacher Ölberg, the vines grow at heights of 130 to 190 metres with a slope of 3 to 15 per cent; the Ruppertsberger Achtmorgen lies at 130 to 160 metres above sea level with a slope of 2 to 5 per cent.

Farming and history

Michael and Thomas Andres, according to their own statements, took over the winery in 2015 from their parents. The vineyards are farmed organically and complemented with selected biodynamic principles. The winery does without chemically synthetic agents, promotes living soils and aims to interfere as little as possible in the development of the vineyards.

Grape varieties and wine style

The winery cultivates Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot varieties, including Spätburgunder, as well as Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, Muskateller, Gewürztraminer and Cabernet Sauvignon. The range includes dry Riesling, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder wines, as well as selected sweet Riesling and Gewürztraminer wines. The winery describes its single-vineyard wines as shaped by minerality, and wines from great sites as expressive in the character of the village, with ageing potential.

Vinification and ageing

The wines from great sites are traditionally vinified in large wooden casks. For the Haardt Herzog Chardonnay and the Ruppertsberg Achtmorgen Chardonnay, the winery documents spontaneous fermentation using natural yeasts, as well as ageing in new and used barriques. After the second fermentation, the sparkling wine rests at least 18 months on the lees.
