Location and classification
The Zechberg, also known as Framersheimer Zechberg, is a single vineyard site in the German cadastral district of Framersheim. It belongs to the Großlage of Petersberg and to the Nierstein area in the Qualitätsweinbaugebiet Rheinhessen.
Aspect and soils
The wine site is fully exposed to the sun; the plots are described as being orientated to the south. The south-facing slopes warm up quickly. The official profile cites deep, nutrient-rich and strongly calcareous calcareous marl-pelosol from calcareous, clayey deposits from the Tertiary sea. For a Zechberg plot, sandier loam over loess is also stated.
Documented wines
For the Zechberg, dry Riesling and dry Chardonnay, as well as mild Spätburgunder and mild Dornfelder, are documented. The soil profile is associated with full-bodied, dense and fruit-emphasising wines with moderate acidity. For a 2023 Chardonnay, full fermentation and maturation in new oak is documented.
Historical name
The wine site was mentioned in 1303 under the name “Zechberc”. The historical name refers to a union of landowners to farm a vineyard.
