Wisselbrunnen

Location and classification

Wisselbrunnen is a vineyard site in Hattenheim, a district of the municipality of Eltville am Rhein, in the wine-growing region Rheingau. The site is located along the railway line between Eltville and Hattenheim, a few hundred metres from the River Rhine. In the vineyard register, it is listed as the single-vineyard site Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen and classified by the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.

Topography and climate

The slope, which is predominantly oriented towards the south to south-south-west, lies at around 70 to 100 metres above sea level and has a gradient of approximately ten percent. The nearby Rhine acts as a heat reservoir and as a reflective surface; as a result, mild conditions and additional sunshine occur in the Rheingau.

Soils and cultivation

The soils consist of loess loam and tertiary marl; in addition, deep, calcareous loam is also described. They are warm, allow water to drain off well and can at the same time store it for the vines’ needs. The area classified by the VDP comprises 6.82 hectares, while the entire vineyard site is given as around 18 hectares. The classified and prevailing grape variety is Riesling.

Wine style

Wines from Wisselbrunnen can reach a high level of ripeness and, while doing so, retain fine fruit and a piquant acidity. For them, an ageing potential is also described.
