Location and classification
Wißberg is an officially documented single vineyard in the cadastral district Sprendlingen. It belongs to the Bingen sub-region and to the collective vineyard Abtey in Rheinhessen. The hill of the same name reaches about 270 metres above sea level and is regarded as the second-highest elevation in Rheinhessen.
Soils and climate
The mild climate meets marl and pararendzina soils made of calcareous loams and sands from tertiary marine deposits. The soil profile includes deep, strongly calcareous clay with a high proportion of source clay. The soils are nutrient-rich, moderately heatable, and have limited water supply and aeration.
Grape varieties and wine style
Several grape varieties are grown on the sand and clay marl soils. For Wißberg, Riesling, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Dornfelder and Spätburgunder are documented. The wines are described as having a dense, powerful, full-bodied and expressive structure, balanced acidity and persistent fruit intensity. White wines show fruity exotic aromas such as mango, honeydew melon and apricot, while red wines show dark-fruity and smoky-spicy notes.
