Location and classification
Weiß Erd is a vineyard site in Kostheim, a district of Wiesbaden, in the wine-growing region Rheingau. The site lies east of Kostheim above the Main, a few kilometres from its confluence with the Rhine. The VDP classifies Weiß Erd as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with Riesling as the classified grape variety.
Topography and climate
The long, south-facing site lies at an altitude of about 90 metres and has a slope gradient of 30 per cent. It benefits from the warm, mild climate of the Rhine plain. Cool air flows down from the Taunus and runs down the slope, creating cooler nights and extending the ripening of the grapes.
Soil and cultivation
The subsoil consists of calcareous, white marl of fine-grained tertiary origin. The soil profile includes loess and loess loam as well as sand, clay, limestone and gravel in slope-deposited marl sediments. The loose soil allows the vines to penetrate deeply down to the calcareous marl. On part of the site, fresh soil has repeatedly been applied to counter erosion and the loss of the topsoil layer; most recently, calcareous loess. The name Weiß Erd refers to the light, white appearance of the calcareous soil as it dries out. The classified area comprises 7.18 hectares.
Wine character
The wines are described as full-bodied or voluminous, with aromas of ripe fruit and a piquant, fruit-driven acidity. The calcareous subsoil is associated with mineral notes. In their youth, the wines are strongly closed.
