Location and Classification
Weingrube is an officially registered single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Boppard. It belongs to the Großlage Gedeonseck in the Loreley area of the wine-growing region Mittelrhein and is one of the individually farmed sites within the Bopparder Hamm complex of vineyard sites. In the 2024 vineyard sites register, 8.3 hectares of planted area are listed.
Terrain and Climate
The site begins near the cut of the Petersbachtal valley and extends at roughly 160 metres above the vineyard sites Mandelstein, Feuerlay and Ohlenberg. The western section is oriented to the south-west and has gradients of up to 50 per cent; the rest falls by about 45 per cent from south-west to south. As part of the Bopparder Hamm, the vineyard areas lie on south-facing slopes alongside a loop of the Rhine. The Rhine acts as a heat store, while the surrounding terrain provides shelter from westerly winds.
Soils and Grape Variety
The soils are assigned to different types of slate. Above Mandelstein, Kieselgallenschiefer, a siliceous slate, is documented. The soils are also described as clay slate and quartzitic sandstone. The most important documented grape variety is Riesling.
Wine and Designation
Documented bottlings from the Weingrube include Riesling Hochgewächs in the styles dry, fine-dry and sweetish. The name is already attested in the 16th century in its historical form “in der weingruben”. In the official register of vineyard sites of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the single vineyard site is listed under number 320306 and the Großlage Gedeonseck.
