Wartberg

Location and classification

Wartberg is a registered single vineyard in the Wonnegau area and within the Großlage Sybillenstein in Rheinhessen. The wine-growing site extends across the cadastral areas of Alzey and Kettenheim.

Area and site

The officially recorded vineyard area comprises 26.0 hectares in Alzey and 29.6 hectares in Kettenheim, for a total of 55.6 hectares. Wartberg lies at around 225 to 280 metres above sea level and is oriented to the east to south-east.

The soil consists of loess-pararendzina. The deep, loamy and calcareous profile contains silty clay and has a high capacity for storing water. For the roughly 300-metre-high Wartberg, a cool microclimate is also described, which allows for prolonged ripening of the grapes.

History

In 1426, Wartberg was documented under the name “an dem Wartenpfade”. The name refers to an earlier signal station or a former observation post in the district.

Grape varieties and wine style

For wines from the Wartberg vineyards of the winery Schloßmühlenhof, Riesling and Pinot varieties are documented as the focus. The site profile describes yellow-fruit wines with notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus fruits. They show a rather slender structure, a refreshing character, gentle acidity and a medium body. For the 2024 Alzey Wartberg Riesling from the winery Schloßmühlenhof, dry maturation and ageing in stainless-steel tank are given.
