Wahrsager

Location and classification

Wahrsager is an officially registered single vineyard in the Mosel wine-growing region, in the Burg Cochem area and the Großlage Rosenhang. The vineyard register assigns the location of the municipality and the cadastral district of Senheim. The official vineyard plot number is 440324; the planted area is 2.6 hectares.

Topography and soils

The site is located in a higher-lying side valley above Senheim and is oriented from south-southwest to south-southeast. It includes steep and very steep sections; for the Senheim vineyards, slopes of up to 75 percent are given. Compared with the Senheim site on the Mosel side, the grapes ripen more slowly in the higher side-valley location. The soils consist of grey, calcareous Devon slate and slate weathering soil.

Grape varieties and cultivation

In the Wahrsager and Lay parcels of a farming producer, Riesling and Spätburgunder are grown. Yield reduction, extended growing seasons, selective hand-harvesting and careful processing are documented. Another farming operator reports that the vines are trained using the traditional Bogreben pruning system and that the harvested material is read by hand.

Documented wine style

A documented Wahrsager wine is a Riesling quality wine with 22 g/l residual sugar, 8.8 g/l acidity and 10.5 percent alcohol. It is described as fruity-fresh, mineral and spicy.
