Location and Geology
The Vogelsberg is locally known as a wine-growing site, Unterbalbacher Vogelsberg, in the Unterbalbach district of Lauda-Königshofen in Baden. The vineyards lie on the Vogelsberg at the entrance to the Balbachtal, above Unterbalbach. The shell limestone hill is documented at a height of about 347 metres.
Vines and Viticulture
The vineyard area was documented in 2009 as 1,596.17 ares. The plantings at the time included Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Riesling, Spätburgunder, Gewürztraminer, Schwarzriesling, Kerner, Zweigelt, Bacchus and Regent.
History
Viticulture on the slopes of the Vogelsberg has been documented since around 1200. After the Second World War, wine-growing declined; at the Vogelsberg, it was taken up again from 1985.
Documented Wines
From this site, a dry Zweigelt red wine and a gently off-dry Bacchus white wine have been documented. A Zweigelt from the 2023 vintage was aged in a small oak cask, a Bacchus from the 2025 vintage in a stainless-steel tank. For the Bacchus, old vines are given.
