Location and Classification
Vogelsang is a legally registered single vineyard in the district of Zornheim. It belongs to the Großlage Gutes Domtal in the wine-growing region of Nierstein in Rheinhessen. The 2024 vineyard directory lists the site under number 720431 with 26.4 hectares of vines planted.
Topography and Soil
The vineyards lie at around 190 to 230 metres above sea level and are oriented to the south to south-west. Vogelsang is described as a sunny site. The soil consists of a very lime-rich rendzina from tertiary marine deposits, which is linked to a limestone algae reef. It is shallow to medium-deep, stony and sandy loam with low water storage capacity for water available to plants, good aeration and warming, as well as limited root penetration.
Pinot Noir and Ageing
Pinot Noir is documented for Vogelsang; the regional description states Pinot Noir on the lime-rich soil. Bottled releases of the 2016 and 2018 vintages from the Münzenberger winery were dry Pinot Noirs from old vines, labelled as Qualitätswein and aged in barrique.
Historical Names
The place name Vogelsang refers to areas with numerous bushes and shrubs that offered nesting sites for birds. Parts of the current area were also called Am Galgen, In der Krummgewann and Auf dem Monzeberg respectively Moßberg in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 1970s, the number of historical vineyard names in Zornheim was reduced to five official sites as part of a vineyard law, including Vogelsang.
