Location and Classification
Vogelsang is an officially registered single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Serrig in the Saar wine-growing area of the Mosel wine region. The statutory vineyard site number is 460261. The site is associated with the former estate of Serrig.
Topography and Climate
The roughly 25-hectare vineyard site extends over slate slopes with gradients of up to 105 percent. It is oriented to the south to south-west and lies approximately between 220 and 340 metres above sea level. The cool microclimate is associated with extended ripening times.
Grape Variety and Wine Making
For the current wines from Vogelsang, Riesling is documented. The winery produces a dry Vogelsang Grosse Lage and a delicately off-dry Vogelsang Kabinett from it. Farming includes steep-slope viticulture and a selective hand harvest of healthy grapes.
Maturation
For the Grosse Lage, gentle pressing, several hours of must maceration time, a slow, cool spontaneous fermentation, ten months’ yeast ageing in 3,000-litre wooden casks, and then subsequent two years’ ageing in bottle are documented. The Kabinett is gently pressed, left briefly on the skins, slowly and coolly spontaneously fermented, stored for ten months on the lees in a stainless-steel tank, and then matured in the bottle for two years.
History
The Serrig estate was founded in 1904 as a Prussian state estate. Vogelsang belonged to the vineyard site names officially assigned to the estate in 1910 and was retained even during the 1971 vineyard site-name reform. For the year 1921, a Serriger Vogelsang Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is documented.
