Location and classification
Vogelsang is a single vineyard in Johannisberg, a district of Geisenheim in the Rheingau. It lies to the east and above Schloss Johannisberg. In the official Hessian wine-growing sites directory, Vogelsang is listed as a named single vineyard with an area of 14 hectares.
Topography and soils
The south-facing, gently rising vineyard extends to around 200 metres above sea level. Its soils consist of gravelly loess and loess clay and have a high water-retaining capacity.
Climate and grape variety
The nearby forest brings cooler influences into the microclimate. As a result, the grapes usually require a longer ripening period. Vogelsang is associated with Riesling.
Wine style and history
Wines from Vogelsang are described as finely mineral, persistent in their finesse, and aromatic with a wide range. With increasing ripeness, they develop further. The name is first documented in 1399 in the form fogelsang and is linked to the songbirds in the adjacent forest.
