Location and classification
The official designation is Burgscheidunger Veitsgrube. The individual vineyard site lies within the cadastral area of Burgscheidungen on a south-facing slope of the Galgenberg above the Unstrut and belongs to the wine-growing region Saale-Unstrut. In the official register of vineyard sites, it is assigned to the area of Schloß Neuenburg and to the grand cru Freyburger Schweigenberg.
Relief and soils
The slopes have inclinations of 10 to 30 per cent; around 0.2 hectares are classified as steep slope. The subsoil consists of glacial loess loam over Bunter sandstone. At the surface, silt and claystone predominate; in places, fragments of limestone and dolomite are exposed.
Vineyard area and winegrowing
The officially recorded vineyard area totalled 5.6961 hectares as of 31 December 2024. For the Veitsgrube, frost-protection sprinkling is documented. Riesling, Weißburgunder and Kerner are proven, as well as the red varieties Pinotin, Portugieser and Dornfelder.
Wine style and name
The site profile describes the wines as finely structured and open to varietal-typical notes of fruit. Dry Kerner and a dry red-wine cuvée are documented; a Kerner was also marketed as a German Prädikatswein Auslese dry. The name Veitsgrube is explained with medieval Veit dances used to drive away evil spirits.
