Ursulinengarten

Location and classification

Ursulinengarten is a legally registered single vineyard in the Walporzheim/Ahr valley area, part of the Großlage Klosterberg, in the municipality of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in the wine-growing region Ahr. The site is listed in the wine sites register of Rhineland-Palatinate under the wine site code 110106 for the cadastral district of Ahrweiler. In 2024, 14.6 hectares of vineyard area were recorded.

Terrain and soils

The vineyard site extends westwards into the Wingsbachtal valley and lies at around 100 to 180 metres above sea level. The terrain is described as steep for 70 per cent, sloping for 20 per cent and flat for 10 per cent. Documented are slope shuttle clays, greywacke weathering soils, loess and loess loam, as well as basalt with stony, crumbly loam. The former Ahrweiler Riegelfeld area, incorporated in 2017, has medium-depth to deep loess and loess loam soils, partly with sandy loam.

Sun and grape varieties

The site, facing west, receives sun already in the early morning thanks to the side valleys directed towards the south. From the broad basin of the Ahr valley, prolonged afternoon and evening sunshine also adds to this. Planted are Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Frühburgunder and Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder). For Ursulinengarten, around 7 hectares of Pinot Noir, 1 hectare of Frühburgunder and 1 hectare of Pinot Blanc are given; the figures do not include the separately designated areas of the former Riegelfeld.

Wine profile

The documented wine profile varies depending on the type of soil and ranges from fruity wines to wines with a pronounced character on basalt-influenced soils.
