Location and Topography
Uhlen is a cross-municipal single vineyard site between Winningen and Kobern-Gondorf on the Lower Moselle. The hillside site faces south and curves inward, and it belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel; it has slopes of more than 60 percent.
Terraces and Climate
Traditional cultivation is carried out on up to 29 terraces with extensive dry-stone walls. The concave, south-facing topography favours a locally warm climate with a Mediterranean influence.
Geology
Uhlen is divided into the areas Blaufüsser Lay, Laubach and Roth Lay. Roth Lay is characterised by hard, reddish Ems quartzite and by slate-containing, stone-rich soils with iron-containing material. Laubach consists of grey slate with a high fossil-related carbonate content; fossil corals and mussels are found there. Blaufüsser Lay originated from a geological fault in younger Laubach layers and features bluish-grey, more clay-rich and comparatively softer slate.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
Riesling is the documented main grape variety. For Laubach, wines are described that have high alcohol potential, relatively low acidity, ripe phenolics, full texture, a soft mouthfeel and often slightly smoky aromas. Roth Lay stands for expressive wines with full aromatics; young wines may initially be closed and mature over a longer period.
