Turmberg

Location and Topography

The Kiedricher Turmberg lies above Kiedrich in the Rheingau on a north-easterly spur near the former Scharfenstein castle. The vineyard site, which faces south-southwest, is at around 240 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of 40 to 60 per cent.

Soil and Grape Variety

The soil consists of phyllite with small admixtures of loess clay. Regionally, the Turmberg is described as a stony, debris slope shaped by slate. Riesling is listed as the classified grape variety.

Area and Classification

The classified area comprises 3.40 hectares; regionally, the vineyard site is described as 3.8 hectares. The Kiedricher Turmberg is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® . The name refers to the preserved keep of Scharfenstein castle, which was built in 1160 on the adjacent hill spur.

Wine Style and Cultivation

Wines from this site are associated with mineral notes, firm acidity and a complex aromatic structure, and have ageing potential. The single-owner winery Robert Weil carries out yield-reducing work in the vineyard, selective hand harvesting and particularly gentle cellar work as cultivation and vinification practices.
