Location and Classification
Taubenhaus is an officially registered single vineyard in the Trarbach district of Traben-Trarbach in the Mosel. It belongs to the Großlage Schwarzlay in the Bernkastel area and carries the vineyard site number 410943. The vineyard directory lists a planted area of 6.5 hectares for 2024.
Relief and Soils
The technical dossier describes Taubenhaus as a steep, east-facing site that extends from the Mosel into the Kautenbachtal valley. A south-west exposure is given, with slope gradients of around 30 to 60 percent and elevations of roughly 160 to 230 metres above sea level. The soils consist of grey and blue slate and their weathered forms.
Cultivation and Grape Varieties
The Taubenhaus winemakers have implemented a shared land consolidation process, replanting and collective cultivation of the site. Shared equipment also includes a crawler vehicle for steep slopes. In the parcels of the Richard Böcking estate, 90 percent of plantings are of Riesling and 10 percent of Spätburgunder. For Taubenhaus plantings at the Ferienweingut Rainer Göbel, Weissburgunder and Rivaner are also documented.
Wine Making and Project History
Taubenhaus was part of an EU-funded pilot project for modernising and cultivating steep slopes more efficiently. Richard Böcking documents a dry Devon Riesling as a cuvée made from Taubenhaus and Grand-Cru sites. For the wines of the estate, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, ageing in Mosel casks, barriques and stainless-steel tanks, longer contact with the lees, low sulphur additions and gentle filtration are specified.
