Täuscherspfad

Location and Size

Täuscherspfad is a single vineyard in the cadastral district of Ober-Ingelheim, in Ingelheim am Rhein. It belongs to the collective vineyard of Kaiserpfalz in the Bingen wine-growing region in Rheinhessen. The vineyard acreage register of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate lists, for the 2024 harvest vintage, a planted vineyard area of 9.1 hectares.

Topography and Soils

The wine-growing site lies at around 135 to 195 metres above sea level and is oriented to the west. The parent material consists of limestone from marine tertiary deposits of a calcareous algae reef. The soil is described as a shallow to medium-deep, very calcareous and very stony sandy loam-Rendzina. It has a low level of utilizable water storage, good aeration and good capacity for warming, while rooting depth is limited.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style

An grower’s specification documents Riesling, Spätburgunder and Silvaner in the site. The regional site profile connects the wines through balanced acidity, mineral and chalky impressions, aromatic expression and potential for development. Notes of citrus fruits, apple and gooseberry are described first, later also riper hints of mango and passion fruit.

Documented Examples of Production and Farming

A documented Täuscherspfad Spätburgunder from the 2013 vintage by Jens Bettenheimer was dry, contained 0 g/l residual sugar and 5.3 g/l acidity at 13.3 % vol. It matured in new wood with very light toasting and was bottled unfiltered. For vineyard areas associated with Täuscherspfad, Ökologischer Weinbau Huster states that it has, for more than 30 years, refrained from using chemically synthetic fertilisers and plant protection products, and instead uses biodiversity and beneficial organisms. According to the regional wine-growing authority, the field name is likely to have been derived from a personal name.
