Location and Classification
Streichling is a legally defined single vineyard in the winegrowing region Hessische Bergstraße, Starkenburg area. The site belongs to the Großlage Bensheimer Wolfsmagen and is assigned to Bensheim as well as the Bensheim district of Zell. It stretches along the northern slopes above the Meerbachtal, from the entrance to the Zeller Tal towards the Odenwald.
Topography and Soils
The slopes, oriented to the south to south-west, have a gradient of around 15 to 30 percent. Streichling is described as a very steep site and is locally also known by the name Hohberg. The soils consist of weathered granite with a thin layer of humus and loess loam. In the upper parts of the slope, sandy and gravelly conditions with granite underneath are mentioned.
Grape Varieties and History
Riesling is the most important documented grape variety of the site. In addition, Chardonnay is grown there on a small plot. Streichling is regarded as an old wine site; the Bensheim municipal winery states that the oldest vineyard there was planted in 1975.
Wine Production
The Chardonnay from the Streichling plot is, as a rule, used by the Bensheim municipal winery as a base wine for sparkling wine. The wines from the holdings there ripen in their own barrel cellar, built in 1875.
