Location and Name
Steinklinge is documented under its full name, Oberlaudaer Steinklinge, as an official single vineyard site in the Oberlauda district of Lauda-Königshofen in Baden. The smallest single vineyard is among the smallest single vineyard sites in the Tauber valley.
Terroir and Climate
The site forms a gentle arc on the lower Altenberg and is oriented to the south as far as the south-west. It lies in the Muschelkalk area of the middle Tauber valley and has stony, skeletal soils with a low soil depth. The name Steinklinge refers to the stony subsoil and the steep terrain.
Grape Varieties and Wines
In the Oberlaudaer Steinklinge, Riesling and Scheurebe are documented. A Riesling planting was established in 2006; of the Scheurebe stock of Johann August Sack’s estate, 3.08 Ar are allocated to this site. A dry Riesling is documented, as well as a Scheurebe from the 2012 vintage, served as a site wine.
Historical Significance
Historically, wines from the Oberlaudaer Steinklinge were regarded in Oberlauda as sought-after goods for trade and were known beyond the local surroundings. The exposed sun-facing position leads to a high accumulation of heat; dry periods are described as a viticultural challenge.
