Location and classification
Steinberg is a legally registered single vineyard within the city area and cadastral district of Bad Kreuznach. It belongs to the wine-growing region Nahe, to the Nahetal area, and to the Großlage Kronenberg.
Ownership and grape variety
In the official vineyard register, Steinberg is listed under number 510135. The site is cultivated and farmed exclusively by a single winegrowing operation and is managed as a monopole vineyard. The documented grape variety is Riesling.
Soil and wine
The soil consists of terrace gravel with admixtures of loess and sand. The operator also describes the terrace gravel as having been deposited by rivers from glaciated Alpine systems and as having been provided with silt deposits. The vineyard produces a dry Riesling with the designation Riesling Steinberg.Monopol.
Vinification and history
For the documented Riesling, the grapes are hand-harvested, transported in small lots and pressed as whole grapes. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in large wooden barrels; afterwards, the wine matures for ten months on the full lees and a further ten months on the fine lees. A wine auction report from September 1926 also lists a Kreuznacher Steinberg Spätlese from the 1921 vintage.
