Location and classification
Steinacker is a single vineyard site in the municipal area of Nieder-Ingelheim in Ingelheim am Rhein. It belongs to the Bingen area and to the Kaiserpfalz grand cru in Rheinhessen. The 2024 vineyard register states 38.4 hectares of planted vineyard area and the vineyard site number 710325.
Topography and soil
The site lies at 130 to 224 metres above sea level and is oriented to the west to north-west. A documented parcel covers two hectares on the sloping part of the site, not on the upper plateau.
The soil consists of limestone and rendzina from tertiary marine deposits associated with a calcareous algal reef. It is shallow to medium-depth, strongly calcareous, and stony and sandy-loamy. The amount of water stored in the soil that is available to plants is low, while aeration and warming are good; rooting depth is limited.
Grape varieties and wine styles
For Steinacker, wines made from Riesling, Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Ortega are documented. The wine styles covered range from dry wines made from Riesling, Silvaner, Weißburgunder and Chardonnay, through semi-dry Weißburgunder, to a sweet Riesling Spätlese and an Ortega Beerenauslese.
Name and history
The site name is documented for the year 1362 as “in dem Steynacker”. As the oldest bottle from a wine cellar, an Ingelheim Steinacker Riesling bottled in 1959 is mentioned; Steinacker Riesling continues to be produced.
