Location and landscape
The Kostheimer Steig lies in Mainz-Kostheim, a district of Wiesbaden, within the designated wine-growing region Rheingau. As a hillside vineyard site, it extends along the Main.
Soils and grape variety
The soils consist of sandy and gravelly Main river terrace deposits with proportions of loess and loess loam. In places they are deep and can allow for good supplies of water and nutrients. The grape variety recorded is Riesling.
Wine character
The wines are described as aromatic and harmonious. A piquant acidity and a fine aromatic interplay shape their style.
Name and classification
The name Steig goes back to the Middle High German word „stigel“. It referred to a ladder or staircase for crossing a fence with electric fencing, or to a steeply rising path. The Kostheimer Steig is listed as an officially registered single-vineyard designation in the Rheingau; the associated registered larger-vineyard designation is Kostheimer Daubhaus.
