Location and classification
The St. Jakobsberg is the single vineyard Ockenheimer St. Jakobsberg in the municipality of Ockenheim, in the Bingen area and in the region St. Rochuskapelle in Rheinhessen. The officially registered vineyard area covers 80.0 hectares. The vineyards are located near the monastery Jakobsberg on elevated ground with a view over the Rhine valley.
Soil
The soil is described as sandy-clayey marl pararendzina. It consists of calcareous loams and sands that originated from deposits of the Tertiary Sea. The deep, calcareous and clay-rich marl has a high proportion of clay that can swell; at the same time, water permeability and aeration are limited.
Grape varieties and wine styles
For the Ockenheimer St. Jakobsberg, wines made from White Pinot (Weißer Burgunder), Grey Pinot (Grauer Burgunder), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rivaner, Scheurebe, Yellow Muscat (Gelber Muskateller), Silvaner and Dornfelder are documented. Evidence is provided for dry, delicately full-bodied, off-dry and noble-sweet versions, including still wines, a Beerenauslese and a White Pinot Cuvée.
Name and single vineyard
The name refers to the close proximity to the monastery Jakobsberg. The associated pilgrimage chapel is described by the regional tourism authority as almost 300 years old. In the wine-growing sites register for Rhineland-Palatinate, St. Jakobsberg is listed as a single vineyard with the site number 710625. A documented White Pinot Cuvée from the 2017 vintage was matured in a wooden barrel made from various noble woods.
