Sonnenseite Ob Der Bruck

Location

The sunny side above the Bruck is a named single-vineyard site in Heidelberg. It lies on the opposite side of the Neckar, across from Heidelberg Castle, and forms part of the preserved vineyards of the historic Heidelberg wine-growing culture.

Topography and Climate

The steep, terraced vineyard site, oriented towards the south-west, has slopes of around 30 to 60 percent. Dry-stone walls are part of the site. The nearby Neckar stores heat and releases it again as the surrounding air cools, while a forest protects the vineyard from cold winds.

Soils and Grape Varieties

The predominant geological formation is described as granite-weathered soil. Within the site, there are also lighter, more nutrient-poor sandstone-weathered soils, as well as more plentiful granite-weathered material. Riesling and Spätburgunder are planted.

History and Cultivation

The remaining vineyard area comprises around 1.4 hectares. After the site had been neglected and overgrown for decades, its cultivation was resumed in 1998. Today it is cultivated by the Clauer and Adam Müller wineries. The Clauer winery produces its wines, including the wines from the sunny side above the Bruck, exclusively in its own cellar.
