Location and classification
The Sonnenköpfchen is a German single vineyard in the Eckelsheim district. It lies in the Rheingrafenstein grand cru area of the Bingen region in Rheinhessen. The official wine-growing sites directory lists the site under number 710505 with 49.7 hectares of vines planted, status harvest 2024.
Relief and soils
The name refers to a small, rounded elevation, a so-called Kopf, as well as to the sun-exposed location. The soil type recorded is marl-Pararendzina. The soils consist of calcareous loams and sands, linked to deposits from the Tertiary sea. The site profile also describes deep, calcareous clay with a high proportion of spring clay, limited permeability to water and air, a high nutrient content and a strong proportion of lime.
Wine character and grape varieties
The wines are associated with a dense, full-bodied style and balanced acidity. For white wines, juicy aromas of exotic fruits and stone fruit are described. Documented are dry Silvaner, Spätburgunder Sekt and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Sonnenköpfchen.
Cellaring
A 2023 Sonnenköpfchen Silvaner from the Julian Wolf winery was matured as a dry Qualitätswein in a stainless-steel tank. A historic Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2010 vintage by Peter and Julian Wolf matured in a barrique. A documented south-west-facing section of the site lies on deep marl-loam.
