Location and Classification
The sun-facing slope is a registered single vineyard in the cadastral district of Guntersblum in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage Krötenbrunnen. In the official wine-growing sites directory, the site is listed under number 720528. The name refers to the south-facing orientation of the vineyard slopes.
Altitude and Soils
Parcels of the Schloßgut Schmitt count here among the higher-lying vineyards at the transition to the Rheinhessen hill country. The altitude is associated with an extended ripening period. The documented soil type is loess over pararendzina. The calcareous, deep, and fine-grained loamy soils contain clayey silt and show good water storage that is available to plants, good aeration and root penetration, as well as high fertility.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
In the sun-facing slope parcels of the Schloßgut Schmitt, Dornfelder, Schwarzriesling, Portugieser, Spätburgunder, Rotberger, Grauburgunder and Silvaner are documented. The wines are described with aromas of yellow fruits, apple, peach, pear and citrus, as well as a slender to medium-bodied structure and mild acidity. They are considered fruity, fresh and harmonious; the extended ripening is intended to avoid excessive ripeness. The documented wine is a dry 2022 Guntersblumer Sonnenhang Rotberger Weißherbst Qualitätswein.
